As an entrepreneur, angel investor and professional venture capitalist, he has been active in over 30 businesses including software, telecommunication services, healthcare services and medical devices. As President/COO of Sofamor Danek, he led the largest spinal medical device company in the world. As a filmmaker, he created, produced and financed the groundbreaking documentary – Two Million Minutes. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an Honorary Doctorate from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He has served on over a dozen non-profit organizations, including as a Trustee of the Kauffman Foundation, a $1.8 billion foundation dedicated to accelerating entrepreneurship.

Founder & CEO, NoInk Communications - NoInk was the leading provider of web, tablet and handheld applications for the medical device industry, with over a 20 corporate customers including Johnson & Johnson, Smith & Nephew, Edwards Life Sciences, Wright Medical and Stryker Howmedica. The company was acquired in October 2004.

President - Mr. Compton served as President of the Neurologic Technologies division of Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE:MDT). With sales of $190 million and 750 employees, this division was a market leader of medical implants, powered surgical instruments and image guided surgical systems for cranial neurosurgery.

President and COO – Mr. Compton was President and Chief Operating Officer of Sofamor Danek Group, Inc. (NYSE) which was acquired by Medtronic in January 1999 for $3.7 billion. With more than $400 million in sales and 1,500 employees, Sofamor Danek was the world’s largest supplier of implants, computer-assisted surgery products, and biologics for spinal surgery. As a venture capitalist, Mr. Compton invested in the company in 1989. He was elected to the Board of Directors in early 1990.

Venture Capital Career
Prior to joining Sofamor Danek, Mr. Compton had a 12-year career as a general partner in two venture capital firms, First Chicago Venture Capital and CID Equity Partners. He has served on numerous corporate Boards of Directors in an array of industries and has been the lead investor in over 20 businesses, five of which have had successful public offerings, including:

Enterprise Systems Inc. – software for hospital automation; $3.2 million invested, IPO on NASDAQ; acquired by McKesson for over $300 million

Sofamor Danek Group, Inc. – spinal medical devices; $2.5 million invested; IPO on NASDAQ, then NYSE; acquired by MDT for $3.7 billion

Software Artistry, Inc. – expert systems-based helpdesk software $2.3 million invested; IPO on NASDAQ; acquired by IBM for over $200 million served as Chairman and interim COO

Previous Business Background
Mr. Compton began his career in systems operations with Telenet Communications, the first X.25 packet switched communications network. He joined IBM Corporation, first as a systems engineer, then as a sales representative selling mainframe computer systems. He left IBM to earn an MBA after which he served as director of sales and marketing for a small high-tech firm started at M.I.T.
